Cemetery Lot Ownership in the City of Warrenton Cemetery
In order to ensure the wishes of those who purchased plots in the cemetery are honored, necessary guidelines are in place regarding who has the authority over the determination of who is interred into the each lot in the cemetery plot.
City Code Section 145.140 (F) states that “Interment of a body other than the documented owner of the cemetery lot or person previously designated by the documented owner shall require written consent for such burial from the plot owner.” This means that in order for a person to be interred in a plot in the City cemetery, they must be the owner of the plot or have a lot previously reserved in their name by the owner.
If this documentation does not exist and the original owner is deceased, then proof of ownership will be required for the interment. This can be a daunting task at a very difficult time. This situation can be avoided by contacting the City Clerk to establish plot designation is in place now. The City Clerk will ensure the record reflects each family plot is designated for a specific person or a delegate responsible for each locations must be on record for any unassigned plots.

Honor a Loved One
The City offers two programs to honor loved ones while beautifying our parks. The Treemembrance program lets friends and family honor a loved one by donating a tree to be planted in a City of Warrenton park of their choosing. This living memorial program has been so well received the City decided to expand the program to include Memorial Benches.
